This plant produces clusters of dark purple to black berries in late summer. These berries are also edible and, like red chokeberries, are often used in jams, jellies, and other processed foods. They are also a food source for birds. The leaves are simple, oval to elliptical, and a glossy dark green during the growing season. In the fall, the foliage turns attractive shades of orange, red, and burgundy, providing good autumn color.
