Features very small, dense and finely textured dark green leaves that provide excellent year-round color. The leaves have very fine soft spines, making it much less prickly and more pleasant to handle than traditional hollies. The texture is often described as resembling a boxwood, but with the toughness of a holly. It produces small, inconspicuous white flowers in spring. Scallywag is a male cultivar. This means it does not produce berries itself. Its primary role, if desired, is to provide pollen for female Meserve hollies (like China Girl or Red Beauty) planted nearby, which will then produce berries.
